What is MLM?
Multi-Level Marketing (often abbreviated to MLM) is a popular and common type of marketing, particularly common in the United States but increasingly throughout the world. Increasingly, MLM may be known by other terms, including Affiliate Marketing and Network Marketing. MLM schemes normally involve home-based businesses whereby distributors or associates work as self-employed salespeople, usually without a direct salary to earn a commission-based income selling the products of the MLM company.
What to look out for
The idea of MLM can sometimes be confused with pyramid schemes, popular in some parts of the world, but illegal in most of the world. In pyramid schemes, the wealth is shared by only a select few and the vast majority of people make no money at all on their investment, whereas in ethical MLM schemes there is no such worry.
In examining different MLM schemes it is worth looking out for particular factors. Schemes that promise great wealth based upon an hour a day of work are likely to be too good to be true, certainly in the short-term. It may be possible that further down the line high rewards are possibly for little time, but as with any business there is often a lot of hard work to be put in first.
Most MLM schemes cost money to either get the learning materials needed or to buy inventory. Before doing so, take the opportunity to research such schemes, either on the net or by contacting people for testimonials who are involved. Don’t just simply take in the comments and testimonials present on the website selling the product. Be more discerning.
Do not underestimate the power of personal contact. Although it can be hard to approach friends and family to be involved in your MLM scheme, it is more likely to be effective than simply buying into a mailing list of thousands of people that you don’t know, and more importantly don’t know you. Many people are who interested in MLM schemes and who are on email lists receive many emails and it will be hard for yours to stand out, whereas your friends and family are more likely to trust you.
Who to look out for
There are some names to look out for in MLM as trusted – some of these include Mike Dillard (Magnetic Sponsoring), Kelly Felix (Rich Jerk), Dick DeVos (Amway). It is important to look for MLMers and schemes with plenty of external testimonials as proof of their success, and not just to rely on a slickly-produced webpage to part you from your cash.
